Lottery Information for Prospective Students

Information for prospective students.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where are you located?
We are located at 2383 N. Druid Hills Rd. NE, Atlanta, GA 30329.

How does the KMS lottery work?
There are 168 seats available for fourth graders. Rising fourth grade students are placed into a batch of applicants by grade and school. The first round of the lottery will pull three students at random from each school batch. After that round is complete, the number of seats remaining open depends upon the number of schools represented in the first round.

The second round places all non-selected students into one batch of applicants. Students are pulled at random to fill the remaining seats.

As an example: if 40 schools have applicants in the first round, then 120 seats could be filled in round one. This leaves 40 seats open for round two. 40 students would be pulled at random from the single batch of all remaining applicants.

Fifth and sixth grade students are placed into one batch of all applicants by grade. Students are pulled at random according the number of seats available for that grade level. We typically have 3 to 15 seats open at each 5th and 6th grade.

Do you use DeKalb textbooks and curriculum?
All students at KMS are issued the instructional materials provided by DCSD. We supplement, enrich and accelerate the curriculum through the use of teacher created materials and locally purchased resources. The state and district curriculum is just the starting point for teaching and learning at KMS.

Should I expect that my straight-A student continues to make straight As while at KMS?
No. The work at KMS is very challenging. Your child may make their first B while attending KMS. You and your child should be prepared for challenging work. Rest assured that every KMS child is capable of rising to the challenge presented to them and demonstrating academic success.

Are there trailers at KMS?
There are two quads with four classrooms, bathrooms and water fountains in each one. Unlike trailers, quad classrooms are square and large in shape. They have everything our regular classrooms do which includes storage, white boards, flat screen interactive boards, and new student and teacher furniture. Currently, our sixth graders have classes in the quads.

If we gain a seat in the lottery, can I request that my child be placed in a class with a friend or with a specific teacher?
No. We ensure that students from the same school are in different classes. This helps all students learn how to make new friends. We do not take teacher placement requests at any time during your enrollment at KMS.

Do test scores influence the order of students selected in the lottery?
No. There is no ranking of students in the lottery.

Is transportation provided?
Buses are available at eight locations throughout the district for travel to and from the building. These are called our "shuttles." Parents are responsible for getting their children to and from the shuttle locations on time. About half of our student body takes the bus. The rest are in carpool or stay in after-care in the afternoons. The seven shuttle locations are:
Peachtree Middle School - 4664 N Peachtree Rd, Dunwoody, GA 30337
Blackburn Park - 3493 Ashford Dunwoody Rd, Brookhaven, GA 30319
Northlake Mall/Sears - 4800 Briarcliff Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30345

How do we enroll in After-care?
Information about the After-care lottery will be available in the summer. A lottery may be held for seats depending on the number of interested families. You may need back-up after-care plans.

What do we do if we are selected in the lottery?
After 5pm on March 29th, you can check your child's status in the application portal. It will say selected or wait list. If you child is selected, you will also get an email with instructions on what to do next. See the top of this page for more steps. SAVE THE DATE: All new families are invited to a mini-orientation event at KMS on Wednesday, May 1 from 8:00 am to 9:00 am. Your child will also attend.

You will be given a waiting list number if your child is on the waiting list. Please do not call the school to inquire about your waiting list status. We do not control or process the lottery or the waiting list. If your fourth grader is in the top 20 to 25 on the waiting list, based on what we have seen happen in the past, we think you have a small chance of getting into KMS by the time school starts in August. If you are beyond #25, you should prepare yourself for other school plans. If your fifth or sixth grader is in the top 5 to 10 on the waiting list, we think you have a small chance of getting into KMS by the time school starts in August. If you are beyond #10, you should prepare yourself for other school plans. The waiting list closes on August 31st, 2024 and enrollment is closed.

How are applicants from GLOBE Academy and BIA placed in the lottery?
1) Do they enter the lottery as GLOBE students or is their application attached to their home/zoned school?
Their application is attached to their zoned attendance area school.
2) Do you accept their standards-based report cards? I believe numbers are used (1, 2, 3, 4) instead of letters.
Yes, the school choice dept. works with the school in order to convert them.
