Summer Reading Ideas
2019-2020 Georgia Children's Book Award nominees
Better known as the Reading Bowl books, these titles would be a great choice if your student will be interested in trying out for the Kittredge Reading Bowl team in the fall. We compete at the Middle School level, so the books your student would need to read are on the 6-8 list. Print your own list here
The 2019-2020 Reading Bowl list has been released and as always, there are many wonderful books on this list! Many of the books touch on complicated topics that are relevant to what is happening in our world today.
Of course, not all of the topics are in one single book, and those present are entwined with other themes such as family, friendship, and courage. These current topics encourage exploration of classic themes like “how do I react to “otherness?” and “things are not always as they seem.” Reading allows students to safely test how they feel about certain issues or people without having to deal with a real-life experience.
The Kittredge Literary Guild is a voluntary reading program designed by the first Kittredge Magnet School Librarian, Mrs. Freddie Ford. Although the Literary Guild has undergone many changes over the years, the purpose has remained the same: to expose students to a broad variety of literary styles and authors and to supplement the curriculum and Georgia Performance Standards. Summer is a great time to finish or get caught up on lists that you didn't complete previously. Each level (Alpha, Beta, Gamma) corresponds to a different grade level (4th, 5th and 6th respectively) with a fourth list (Literary Scholar) that goes above and beyond. Don't try to get too far ahead because the content of many of the books, particularly the historical fiction, correlates to what is being taught in each grade level.
These are the lists:
